The Maxwell brothers have three times as many lawn cutting jobs as the Jackson brothers. If the Maxwell brothers have 9 lawn cutting jobs, how many jobs do the Jackson brothers have?

  4. 3

The correct answer is D. This is a division problem. Divide the number of jobs the Maxwell brothers have by 3. 9 ÷ 3 = 3.

ELEMENTARY MATH – Grade 4 Standards – Algebra & Patterns

Flood level for the Big River is 50 feet. One day last spring, the river level was 48 feet at 1:00 P.M., and Big River's level was rising at a constant rate of 1 foot every 2 hours. At what time did Big River reach flood level?

  1. 7:00 P.M.
  2. 5:00 P.M.
  3. 3:00 P.M.
  4. 2:00 P.M.

The correct answer is B. To reach flood level, Big River had to rise 2 feet (50 - 48 = 2). If the river rises 1 foot in 2 hours, it would rise 2 feet in 4 hours. 4 hours after 1:00 P.M. would be 5:00 P.M.

ELEMENTARY MATH – Grade 5 Standards – Data Analysis & Probability

In a regular deck of 52 cards, there are twenty-six red cards and twenty-six black cards. Thirteen of the red cards are hearts and the other thirteen red cards are diamonds. Thirteen of the black cards are clubs and the other thirteen black cards are spades. If a person pulls one card out of the deck without looking, what is the probability that it will be a heart?

  1. 1/52
  2. 1/26
  3. 1/13
  4. 1/4

The correct answer is D. Thirteen out of 52 cards are hearts (13/52 = 1/4). Therefore the probability of getting a heart when only one card is drawn is 1/4.
